The
Urban League of Central Carolinas is a multi-service, non-profit Agency,
organized in 1978. Its mission is to promote financial stability among
African-American families and others, and racial inclusion in our community. Our
range of programs can benefit anyone in need of education, skills
training, career development, employment services, and youth programs. We serve persons from
all economic levels - from area professionals to those living within
designated "fragile" and "at risk" neighborhoods. The Urban League
has always been stalwarts for advocacy on behalf of its' constituency. We have
something for most everyone. Having served over 25,000 people, we proudly
celebrate 30 years of service to this community.
- Incorporated in
1978 as a 501c3, the Urban League of Central Carolinas is an affiliate
of the National Urban League and a United
Way participating
agency.
- The Urban League
serves those in need of education, skills training, career development,
employment services, and youth programs.
- Currently operates
programs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Davidson, and Union County. Plans in the future to
expand to other surrounding counties.
- We have two
state-of-the-art computer labs at the main office with more than 75 computers.
- Served nearly 1500 children, youth (18-21),
and adults in our community.
- Our job placement
rate in our adult program is 85%.
Professional Adult
Empowerment Program (PEP) The Professional
Adult Empowerment Program is a 6-week career development program designed
especially for underserved adults (low-skilled and/or un/underemployed).
We use a holistic approach to help our students enhance their
professionalism as well as their computer and interviewing
skills.
Customized Computer
Training: Using Microsoft Office and
computer lab rentals to companies.
Stepping Up Adult
Training Program: A new adult workface-training
program, to eligible Hispanic/Latino incumbent and dislocated workers.
Urban Youth Empowerment
Program (UYEP): Program is designed to assist
at-risk, out of school and/or adjudicated youth between the ages of 18-21 in
becoming more self-sufficient members of their communities.

Linking Youth To
Technology through Education (LYTE): Program serving
250-300 youth by providing training in computer information technology resulting
in increased computer skills.
Credit
Smart: Program
that encourage home ownership as a key step toward financial stability by
showing potential owners the step-by-step process of getting a loan and
purchasing a house.
The League’s most recent Annual Report (hyperlink to
Annual Report here) of 2006-2007 indicates funding as follows: Government and
Private Grants/program services 39%; United
Way 33%; Contributions &
Membership 13%; Special Events 11%; and Miscellaneous 4%. Gifts from corporations and individuals assist the Urban League to
continue operating and maintaining its vital services and programs to the
community.
