Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Gala
is one of the largest and most recognized fundraising galas in Charlotte.
This black tie event will take place at the Embassy
Suites Hotel, Charlotte-Concord, Golf Resort and Spa in Concord,
NC on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 6:00pm. Each year hundreds of supporters and spo nsors
attend this event enjoying networking opportunities, reception, dinner,
and entertainment.
As
we celebrate “30 Years of Urban Empowerment,” the highlight
of the evening is the presentation of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award.
This year, our theme is “Celebrating 30 Years of Committed
Service to Our Community: 1978-2008.” The presentation of
the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award during the event will honor the contributions
of individuals who are involved in the promotion of long-term financial
stability among underserved families and racial inclusion in our
communities. This year we are honoring two individuals in the community
who best exemplify the mission of the Urban League of Central Carolinas,
and who have worked to build firmer bridges of understanding between
the “haves” and “have-nots.”

The Urban League of Central Carolinas helps underserved populations
bridge the gap between dependency and economic self-sufficiency.
We are seeking your support to continue providing our vital
programs to the communities that we serve. We ask that you
take an active role in helping others help themselves by supporting
the League through sponsorship of this event. Participation
in the event is available via sponsorships, table purchases,
and advertising in the event program. All of which are detailed
in this package. The Urban League of Central Carolinas does
not give handouts. Instead, we are proud to provide people
with the training and education necessary to enter the workforce
and enhance their ability to support themselves and for our
youth to succeed inside and outside the classroom.
Our programs
include but are not limited to:
• Professional Adult Empowerment
Program (PEP) –serving unemployed and underemployed adults
• Linking
Youth to Technology through Education (LYTE) serving elementary
and middle school students
• Urban Youth Empowerment Program
(UYEP) –serving at-risk and adjudicated 18-21 year olds
• Hispanic-Latino
business and computer training initiatives serving incumbent
and dislocated Hispanics-Latinos
All of our programs focus on providing computer training courses, job readiness, life skills, and/or job placement to our youth and adult clients. We proudly boast an 85% job placement rate through our PEP program and 72% of our youth program clients successfully complete our rigorous 9-month life changing program.
Even though the Urban League is proud to have served over 25,000 residents through our various programs since 1978, we know that the need is far greater. As such, the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Gala helps us raise funds to continue reaching out to those most in need in our community.
Your sponsorship of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Gala keeps Urban League programs alive! Sponsorships allow the Urban League to continue providing valuable services to those most in need in our community. In 2006-2007, our unique training services were offered to over 1500 people.
Plus, you’ll be in good company if you choose to sponsor this event.
