Global Minority Council (ULGMC)
PURPOSE:
There are growing needs within the Hispanic/Latino and other minority
communities. The Urban League as part of its expanding role to service
the diverse population of Charlotte, initiated an Hispanic/Latino
Round Table almost two years ago. The purpose of the roundtable
was to bring together a small but influential group from the Urban
League (African-American community) and the Hispanic/Latino community
of leaders to build dialogue, improve communications, and strengthen
relations between both groups. In 2004, our group has renamed this
effort as the Urban League Global Minority Council (ULGMC) in order
to be sure it is clear we are open and inclusive (involving African-Americans,
Latinos, and others) for a wide range of communities we may be able
to serve.
Our goals and objectives are:
- To meet and discuss issues and concerns relevant
to our communities and to seek ways to collaborate, research needs,
and coordinate and find resources to better serve the unique Charlotte
diverse community.
- To help meet educational and employment and training
needs for youth and adults, strengthen the potential workforce
and support business and employer needs.
- To emphasize programs and services that will promote
race relations, intercultural relations, community development,
and volunteerism. These efforts will be coordinated through the
Urban League’s Joe Martin Institute of Race Relations and
our ULGMC.
WHAT ARE MAJOR ISSUES & ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES?
ISSUES:
Changing lives, bringing our diverse community together
and sharing resources is vital! Nationally and locally, in the Charlotte
Region, the Hispanic/Latino population and other minorities is growing.
With that growth comes the tremendous needs of education, training,
improved communications, reducing language barriers, adjustment
to a new community, building trust in a new environment, finding
and utilizing available resources, and much, much more. A mechanism
was established to begin addressing some of these needs. The ULGMC
took the position that every issue could not be addressed. Thus,
we decided to begin the process by establishing the following areas
to be proactive:
- Design and implement a Cultural Ambassador Model
(CAM). There are more common issues between African-Americans
and Latino/Hispanics than differences, such as disadvantages in
education, low wages, affordable housing, & bridging the digital
divide. Also, lack of knowledge and understanding of each other’s
cultures can lead to misunderstanding and misconceptions. We have
established the CAM and are currently recruiting adults to become
Cultural Ambassadors (CA) to serve as speakers in the community
to build dialogue and improve communications.
- Special Programs Committee to research and recommend
demonstration programs to meet certain youth and adult education
& training needs. A special emphasis will be reviewed to assist
in developing program models for “bridging the digital divide.
- Special support for Pathways to Success services,
IBM Literacy classes (Reading Recognition) & other special
programs serving unique community needs as offered by the Urban
League.
