Housing Initiatives

Urban League & Freddie Mac Host Credit Smart Workshop Saturday, July 19 from 9-2p - Click here for more info and registration

Goal: To promote economic self-sufficiency and build financial capacity through home ownership and fiscal responsibility.

Possibly the single largest investment an individual or family may make in a lifetime is homeownership. The ULCC is a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency. Without a doubt, this program builds economic self -sufficiency and stability for families as well as for the community.

Our on-going housing initiative is called the Homebuyer Education program. It targets low-to-moderate income families, most who are first-time homebuyers. The Urban League provides pre-purchasing credit counseling, information about affordable housing programs, steps involved in the home buying process, and money management. The program also provides a forum for candid talk about home buying obstacles and the power of planning and determination. The Homebuyer's Education program allows clients to talk to representatives from every aspect of the purchase process - loan officers, realtors, appraisers, closing attorneys, and others. ULCC clients are prepared, informed, and confident as they realize their dream of home ownership.

This past year, the Homebuyers Education program served 152 individual clients, helped 66 clients become homeowners, counseled 141 group participants through homebuyers clubs and workshops, and made over 1000 contacts via housing fair participants.

The program objectives are to:

  • Encourage home ownership as a key step toward economic self-sufficiency
  • Show potential owners the step-by-step process of getting a loan and purchasing a house
Certify first-time homebuyers, which qualifies them for down payment assistance and other purchase incentives.
