Urban League has been in Charlotte since 1979 delivering successful
workforce development programs to the community. For its efforts,
the League received the "Exemplary Public Interest Contribution
(EPIC)" award from the U.S. Department of Labor in 1999.

the League as a quality job skills training provider.

Professional
Adult Empowerment Program (PEP) NEW
Program Overview
The Professional Adult Empowerment Program is a 6-week program designed
especially for underserved adults (low-skilled and/or un/underemployed).
Entrance Requirements for participants are a 9th Grade Reading Level,
un/underemployed and a pretest in computer skills. The program offers
the following technology skills training and professional development
classes:
Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential Learning
Curriculum. The Microsoft Unlimited Potential course offerings
contains many examples of practical, real-world examples and applications
covering computer basics, word processing, spreadsheets, databases,
presentations, Internet and e-mail and digital media
Financial literacy training using
Wachovia’s eCommunities curriculum focusing on money management,
establishing and managing credit, loans and homeownership
Empowerment/Life Skills combines self-improvement,
personal development and career development training using a holistic
approach to enhance participants attitudes and confidence. Personal
counseling is available on an as-needed basis.
Internship (2-weeks optional)
An integral part of the program is a two-week, unpaid internship
that the participants experience at local businesses or organizations
such as Coca-Cola, The American Red Cross, The Department of Social
Services, The JobLink Center, etc. The internship allows the participants
the opportunity: (1) to utilize the skills they have acquired during
classroom training; (2) to gain hands-on experience in the office
environment; and, (3) receive instant feedback on their performances.
The students are treated as employees and assigned training-related
work.

Preparation And Skills Success (PASS)
PASS is an enrichment program for individuals that score below the
9th grade on the reading comprehension pre-test. The program uses
instructor-led, customized computer-based training that prepares
participants for the (PEP) program. Keyboarding training will be
available to effectively participants that have limited or no typing
skills.
The next PEP graduation is December 7, 2007.
