Bi-LO/Urban League African American Scholarship Program "You Make The Difference"
Open to High School seniors in the Urban League of Central Carolinas service area who have been accepted to and will enter college on a full-time basis. The BI-LO Scholarship ($2,500) may be used for payment of tuition and required food, room and board or similar living expenses on a one-year non-renewable basis.
Eligibility:
The scholarships will be awarded to applicants who are pursuing full-time studies leading to a Bachelor's Degree at an accredited institution of higher learning. Students must excel academically, be involved in extracurricular activities, and have a need for financial assistance.
The National Urban League’s (NUL) slogan, “Our Children = Our Destiny,” epitomizes the rich tradition and mission of our ninety-year old parent organization. The very viability of our community is dependent on the academic and social development of our children and youth. Current and future workforces will draw upon this pool of young people. Will they be prepared? Education has always been an “equalizer” for those seeking parity within our communities. If it takes a whole village to raise a child, then the NUL’s Campaign and your local Urban League’s Campaign creates the “new village,” an environment with the infrastructure and support system to help our children grow and develop spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The Campaign is about helping our youth become all that they can be. The Campaign for children and youth:
• Positive Attitudes about academic achievement
• Consistent and enthusiastic participation in school
• Commitment to meeting and exceeding education standards
• Increased social polish and improved navigational skills
• Heightened sense of history, community and self-worth
In short, our Campaign, “Achievement Matters”, creates a new village and seeks to raise the achievement level of our children, preparing them to meet the demands of the 21st Century. The League has implemented a variety of specialized training and integrated activities, using goal specific programs and services.

• The LYTE program has been in operation since 1996. LYTE operates state-of-the-art computer labs for summer and after school programs in both Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union County. It is an education, tutoring and personal development program for children and youth to prepare them for success in school and in life. We serve children and youth of all ages.
• The key component of the LYTE program is providing tutoring and training to better prepare youth for competency on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Computer Technology Skills Competencies (K-12).
• The program is designed to strengthen computer technology achievement and help youth bridge the “digital divide.”
• With support from United Way, AT&T, National Urban League, Time Warner, Microsoft, TJMaxx, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, Lance, Philip Morris, Foundation for the Carolinas, and many others, this LYTE program serves almost 700 children and youth yearly.
• LYTE coordinates services with the YWCA, Girl Scouts, area churches, and public and private schools.
• We provide customized computer training to meet the specifications of other agencies and community based organizations. For example, our “Camp Gigabyte” for girls in partnership with the YWCA and the Hornet’s Nest Girl Scout Council, provides computer training in multi-media technology
