Urban League of Central Carolinas

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

The Urban League of Central Carolinas (ULCC) is partnered with the Steve Smith Family Foundation and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to create a virtual learning academy for homeless and underserved students attending Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).  With the ruling of virtual learning for the 2020 – 2021 academic school year due to COVID-19, homeless and underserved students were impacted in a negative way due to lack of stable housing, a dedicated workspace to do schoolwork, support at home to assist with their virtual learning and troubleshooting of technology.  Through this Virtual Learning Academy, we support over 100 children with virtual learning support, personal dedicated cubicle workspace, personal protective equipment (PPE), headphones, school supplies, meals, transportation and healthy exercise.  The Academy is housed at Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte, which is within one mile of four hotels that house homeless families.

What Does The Virtual Learning Academy Offer?

  • Students have access to a Chromebook with WiFi connectivity for virtual learning.
  • The virtual learning is taught by certified teachers using a CMS-approved curriculum.
  • Students maintain full access to rigorous and engaged curriculum.
  • The curriculum offered in the Virtual Learning Academy is the same curriculum offered to students who receive instruction in-person.
  • School supplies for students
  • Personal Protective Equipment for students and teachers
  • Healthy exercise
  • Breakfast and lunch for students

We Need Your Help

Financial Support

While we look forward to starting somewhere, providing virtual learning support for a small number of children, we also realize the number will pale in comparison to the nearly 5,000 homeless children in the CMS system that will need daily access to services and assistance. It is for this reason we are counting on our community to help us support the remaining 4,965 students that need and deserve assistance. Your financial support will help us broaden our reach and impact by covering the cost for expenses to include workspace, instruction, meals, school supplies, PPE, cleaning materials and thermometers, and transportation.
