Urban League of the Central Carolinas hosts Vigil in Memory of Tyre Nichols – MEDIA ADVISORY

Urban League of the Central Carolinas hosts Vigil in Memory of Tyre Nichols

Charlotte, NC–On Sunday, January 29, at 6:00 pm, the Urban League of the Central Carolinas will host a peaceful gathering to honor the life of Tyre Nichols and issue a call to action that mobilizes the national Urban League’s 21 Pillars for Redefining Public Safety and Restoring Community Trust on a local level.

The gathering will include remarks from interim president & CEO, Robyn Hamilton, and other community leaders to recognize Nichols’ life and promote justice, healing and community safety in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

“As a community, we are hurt and traumatized by the tragic and horrific loss of yet another young black man. I am also the mother of a black son, and I can only imagine the pain the Nichols family is experiencing. It is important that we come together to stand with the Nichols family and our brothers and sisters across the nation. Thus, we invite mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and all people to gather in remembrance and peace. We will provide a space for healing, call out injustice, and continue to press for continued action toward police reform,” said Hamilton.

The National Urban League developed the 21 Pillars for Redefining Public Safety and Restoring Community Trust as a guideline not only for reforming policies and procedures, but for reimagining the relationship between police and the communities they serve. National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued a statement with a concluding note that ‘the National Urban League and our affiliates around the country are committed to working with police departments to achieve this lasting change.”

All those who would like to attend are invited to meet on the steps of the Urban League at 740 W. 5th St., Charlotte, NC 28202, on the corner of 5th and Cedar, at 6:00 pm. For more information about the Urban League of Central Carolinas visit https://www.urbanleaguecc.org/.
